Humans slapped and shouted at autonomous cars in California this year

#artificialintelligence

If robots really did take over it seems humans could react aggressively, according to latest reports of people lashing out at autonomous vehicles in California. Two out of six crash reports involving vehicles with autonomous driving capabilities involved a person approaching a car and attacking it, according to California's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). In one of the cases, the car was in autonomous mode, however there was a driver behind the wheel, as is required by California law. The news follows California state's newly issued regulations, which will allow autonomous cars with particular permits to be driven on public roads without a human sitting behind the wheel, beginning on 2 April. On January 2, 2018, a Chevy Bolt EV, operated by General Motors' Cruise driverless car division in San Francisco was waiting at a green light for pedestrians to cross when a man'ran across Valencia Street against the "do not walk" symbol, shouting, and struck the left side of the Cruise AV's rear bumper and hatch with his entire body' According to a report by the LA Times, on January 2, 2018, a Chevy Bolt EV, operated by General Motors' Cruise driverless car division in San Francisco was waiting at a green light for pedestrians to cross.

GM applies to deploy self-driving Cruise AV robo-taxi next year

The Japan Times

DETROIT – General Motors Co. is seeking U.S. government approval to include a fully autonomous car -- one without a steering wheel, brake pedal or accelerator pedal -- in its first commercial ride-sharing fleet in 2019, executives said. For passengers who cannot open doors, the Cruise AV -- a rebranded version of GM's Chevrolet Bolt EV -- has even been designed to perform that task. It will have other accommodations for hearing and visually impaired customers. This will be one of the first self-driving vehicles in commercial passenger service and among the first to do away with manual controls for steering, brakes and throttle. What is the driver's seat in the Bolt EV will become the front left passenger seat in the Cruise AV, GM said.

Edmunds: Ioniq, Bolt, Leaf give EV buyers options to Model 3

Nissan is launching a revamped version of its Leaf electric vehicle, going head-to-head with Tesla's Model 3 and beating off criticism that a limited driving range will dull its mass-market appeal. This photo provided by Tesla shows the 2017 Tesla Model 3, a compact electric sedan that offers two levels of range. The Tesla Model 3 has captured the interest of both mainstream car buyers and electric vehicle enthusiasts alike. The Model 3's combination of sleek styling, long-range and semi-autonomous driving features gives the Model 3 an "it" factor that's hard to resist. For buyers who are interested in an electric vehicle but don't want to wait around for the Model 3, several great alternatives are available now at a similar price point.

GM begins mass-producing self-driving Bolt EVs

The Chevy Bolt EV is an affordable, long-range electric car that's garnered positive reviews, but GM wasn't willing to stop there. They've just completed production on 130 self-driving test Bolt EVs. These aren't the first autonomous Chevy Bolt EVs that GM has produced. The company has been testing over 50 cars in San Francisco, Scottsdale and Detroit since June 2016, though the self-drive technology on this current crop of Bolts is more advanced. This new fleet of Bolts is notable, though, because it's the first time a company is using mass production techniques on self-driving vehicles.

GM Will Test Self-Driving Cars On Michigan's Snowy Roads In Aggressive Push To Autonomous Future

Forbes - Tech

On a day when temperatures dropped into the single digits in metro Detroit, General Motors Chief Executive Mary Barra said GM will immediately begin testing self-driving cars in Michigan's brutal driving conditions. The announcement came one week after Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation allowing autonomous vehicles on any road in the state. "Revolutionizing transportation for our customers while improving safety on roads is the goal of our autonomous vehicle technology, and today's announcement gets us one step closer to making this vision a reality," Barra said at a news conference in GM's glass-enclosed lobby, as the wind swirled across snow-encrusted sidewalks outside. "Our autonomous technology will be reliable and safe, as customers have come to expect from any of our vehicles." GM has already been testing autonomous vehicles at its sprawling Technical Center in nearby Warren, Mich.
